Welcome to Women of Vision |
Major ProjectsThe running of a school preparedness project for five to six year olds, who will only be allowed to go to school when they turn seven. WoV identified a need to keep these children off the streets and seek to equip them with the skills necessary for schooling. BI-weekly visits to the Welfare Department in Rissik Street where the authorities have granted them permission to assist people whom they accompany, with filling their pension application forms as well as assisting them with their medical reviews. Accompanying women and sometimes children as often as three times a week to the Domestic Violence Court in Market Street. WoV assist women getting court orders etc. Representatives at the courts recognize WoV as a bona fide community support group. Arranging weekly and monthly food parcels for the families who are unemployed and waiting job placements, pensions or disability grants. WoV have also initiated a movement to supply donated bread where there is a dire need. The WoV have undergone a training course and now volunteer their time freely for a weekend and standby victim empowerment project at Sophia Town Police Station. This was done to address the lack of police sensitivity at weekends especially since this is when the highest level of domestic problems is recorded. In a move to introduce the youth to the plight of the community they've taken to secondary school pupils to volunteer their time during school holidays. WOV then train these pupils to handle victims and deal with the issues in a sympathetic and confidential manner. There is also an after school project which runs from 15h00 to 18h00 daily where children are encouraged to do their homework, read and study. Voluntary pupils also assist them with their homework and projects. WoV are seeking to encourage tertiary students in the community to volunteer their time and to organize and in turn receive training in victim empowerment and assistance. The auxiliary services WoV provide, include the distribution of legal rights literature and also running a AIDS awareness campaign where the community is invited to attend free lectures by educators in the field and also undertaking to provide family planning and advise. WoV have also undertaken an Anti-rape campaign in the community and are addressing the alarming rate of teenage pregnancies in the community.
